Just posting won’t do the job – but what will?

clock with social media

If you want social media to drive your business results you need to effectively manage your social media presence.

Why? Because it takes a little more than just a few posts now and then, no matter how interesting, compelling and relevant they are, to be seen and recognized in the social media jungle.

The good news? You don’t need to be an expert to take your social media presence to the next level. Just follow the selection of our tips which will help you to plan and manage your social media activity based on a simple and effective strategy. Measure and constantly adjust your strategy according to your results.

Tip 1: Define your target audience and get to know them

This is an often neglected or half-hearted carried out necessity to be taken seriously.

Define your target audience in terms of personas“, understand who they are as people. Don’t just focus on age and location (demographics) but consider interests, values, challenges they face in their day-to-day business (psychographics). This will help you to understand what they want to hear or read from you and where to find them.

Spend enough time on this and regularly refine your personas according to your insights.

Tip 2: Find your audience and identify places they are frequenting

Here is how you can do this:

  • Find influencers, experts in your field with a strong social media presence and lots of followers.
  • Learn what’s trending in your industry and get inspiration for your own social media content.
  • Pay a visit to competitor sites and get to know your audience there.
  • Join conversation in a tactful, meaningful way, get engaged.
  • Determine topics of interest, identify pain points.

Those are opportunities not to be missed and a great resource of insights along your journey.

Tip 3: Set goals and learn from them

Did you ever think about what you want to achieve when posting? And define goals for your posts? Most probably not often enough.

Before creating a post, always ask yourself what is your intention, what is really important. Whether it is

  • building authority on a certain topic,
  • reach or
  • engagement of your audience

to name some general ones, define the purpose of each single social media contribution. And measure the results. This is not rocket science, it is digital marketing coming full circle.

Measure? Each social media platform offers inbuilt insights (analytic functions) which allow to track important parameters like which post got the most clicks or was shared the most. Learn from those insights to create more of it: more topics that interest, more content formats that engage.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it, but surprisingly is often neclected. Remember: Analytics are your friend not your enemy.

Tip 4: ADS – Advertise!

Social media platforms are data mines. The thought of it might be a little bit scary to an individual but to a marketer or business owner it is powerful and invaluable.

Social media advertisement combines specific messages with enticing images to stimulate the appetite of a very particular group of people, appetite to click, wanting more. But it is not just that.  Only advertising makes your content, your posts, reach it’s full potential. So plan for ads as part of your posting strategy and make your content go a longer way.

You won’t believe it, but it is as important as content creation!

Tip 5: Manage your time

Social media can be scarily time consuming. As it comes for many people on top of their already busy day it is important to plan ahead and set up a schedule.

Block time to create content. There are several tools available which will help you to schedule your posts out in advance (e.g. HootsuiteBuffer).

Don’t forget to have notifications/alerts turned on so that you will be able to respond when interaction is needed. Reserve time to keep an eye on what works and more important what not. Adjust your strategy regularly to create more of what really interests your audience.

With these simple, but certainly not comprehensive steps you will be able to turn your occational, random posts to a well structured social media presence that will help you to get you where you want to be and support your overall business goals.
